Workshops in Spain 2017, Guadelest Valley, Alicante

Workshops: Autumn 2017

October 7-10

The workshop will start with class at 10.00-1200 each day with an hour break to be followed

by the creative dance workshop from 13.00-15.00.

Workshop information

In the creative workshop section we explore through given tasks our own creativity and how following the directives of these tasks we can move away from a world of pre-taught steps to one of pure abstract movement.

“Room-Writing” exercises I first encountered in my time working with William Forsythe in Frankfurt Ballet are employed along with other visualised forms of reference –literally as “maps” for the body to follow in 3 dimensional space.

Simple tasks using points of the body i.e elbows, knees, hips, shoulders, noses and ears are used literally as pencil points to follow for example the letters of your name in space.Hence the title."DRAWING IN THE WILD"

Emphasis will be on changing points during these

Once the student has cleared the mental space necessary to follow these VISUALISATIONS a new organic language is created that flows in a way that often in step constructed sequences of movement the student fails to achieve…

Later changes of rhythm, repetition, video-scratching(movement reversal) and other tools will be encouraged. The material created by each individual will possibly be then be put into the context of duos trios quartets with surprising results: sync ups fragmentations cannons interactions that are all spontaneously arrived at in the moment of execution!

Finally the ultimate goal of the creative dance workshops is to feel and let the influence of the natural environment infiltrate our consciousness. The effects of peace, silence and space cannot be underestimated and this re-connecting with nature is a reconnecting with self. Furthermore the simple act of looking carefully at our immediate environment wether it be a pine tree, mountain side or tiny plant or cloud formation will be found to be an enormous source of information and movement inspiration. Also engendered in these observations given the special natural setting the workshops take place in ,emotions will also be stimulated and incorperated into or inform the development of our material.

Class information

The class begins with a slow gentle warm up on the floor where we gradually stretch out the muscles of the back and legs as well as hips by utilizing breath and yoga inspired positions developed by the teacher to release the tension and stiffness in the body first thing in the morning or in the class.

After we unfurl the spine to stand up and establish contact for awhile through the opened souls of our feet the connection of energy between earth and sky we do a plie exercise incorporating use of upper torso articulation of shoulder joints, release of weight into the ground via plies in both parallel and opened positions –above all again we are aiming to lengthen the spine and leave the head floating on top of it so to speak- I think of plie as an” ironing out”of the body taking the weight out of the knees.

After this we go through a range of simple tendue exercises involving placement and standing leg –sense of centre-incorporating its opposite : release and weight directed movements again the play between parallel and open is integral as well as stretch and release..the tendues develop with changes of direction, use of floor, use of direction: walking forwards and backwards through space, use of curve in upper torso as well as more extended use of ports de bras which will LEAD the body to new positions and configurations in space i.e use of arms to open spaces into which the body has to follow…

From the corner we develop more technically demanding sequences involving battement, spiral turns as well as floor to connect passages of movement –there will a strong emphasis on use of plie and dynamic use of rhythm/musicality here-extreme off balance movements which will go back to centred movements or positions will be encountered.

Always by the end of class we develop a more challenging choreographic sequence which will be built on each time here we will encounter all of the above plus original and unusual co-ordinations involving radical use of carving in space with the arms as well as spiral articulations of hips,shoulders,torso,heads-in short total movements that are not blocked by the rigid use of static poses or ports de bras but are designed to create seamless organic and •boneless• movement.

The essence of the class is DANCE itself in its purest and most enjoyable sense .great use of dynamic and taking risks with off centre movements that tombe/fall into and are•saved by• the following moves or positions.Use of release, focus, musicality and still technical ability/correctness are all called upon!

Dancing following the spiral laws of nature, as well as my own slightly quirky but still organically organized ports de bras form the essence of these contemporary orientated classes in which elements of classical, contemporary and release are integral.
